Rewilding in a Climate Changed Garden

Rewilding has quickly become one of those terms you hear everywhere—at lectures, in garden magazines, on plant tags, and across social media. But as its popularity grows, its meaning often becomes diluted just when clarity matters most.

In the video below, I show you how I transformed a client’s suburban landscape—once dominated by pachysandra and azaleas—into a vibrant pollinator garden using a mix of native plants and adaptive perennials. These are long-lived plants that don’t rely on perfect conditions; instead, they adjust to variability and continue to perform year after year.

Now, serviceberries anchor the planting, and the space has come alive—humming with bees from spring through summer.

It is less about returning to some remembered past and more about restoring ecological function where we live now.

On my property that began not with a grand plan, but with small incremental recognitions and additions. The meadow around my beehives was not just beautiful; it was forage in a suburban matrix where nectar is often scarce. The brush pile I almost cleared away became shelter for wildlife. The vegetable garden that was consistently roto-tilled every spring, remains untouched. The monoculture evergreen screen that I removed because of disease, became a mixed species hedgerow habitat for foliage, flowers, berries, and shelter. I started to plant “communities” instead of specimen plants. Gradually, I began to see the garden not as something I controlled, but as something I collaborated with.

That shift feels especially urgent now.

In the Mid-Atlantic we are experiencing longer stretches of summer heat, heavier rain events followed by drought, warmer winters that confuse plant cycles, and measurable declines in bird populations. Climate change is not abstract here. It is visible in stressed trees, erratic weather, and invasive insect populations that rise and fall unpredictably. Rewilding, in this context, is not a trend. It is adaptation.

Ecologist Douglas Tallamy has long argued that native plants form the foundation of the local food web. Without them, insect populations decline; without insects, birds cannot raise young. The data are sobering. But what I find hopeful is that the solution, at least in part, is within reach of ordinary gardeners.

Rewilding begins with restraint.

It means resisting the urge to clean every soil surface in autumn. When we strip away leaf litter and cut every stem to the ground, we remove the winter shelter of countless organisms we rarely see — moth pupae, solitary bees, beetles, fireflies. Leaves are not trash. They are habitat. When I rake now, I move leaves from lawn into beds and let them lie. By spring they have softened into soil and I mulch over them in the spring, having done quiet ecological work all winter. See my post on Chop and Drop.

Many of my leaves are raked into some large beds anchored by shrubs. I don’t pile them onto perennials as that can smother them.

It also means reconsidering chemicals. Home landscapes, taken together, cover enormous acreage. What we apply does not stay neatly contained within property lines. Fertilizers disrupt soil biology; insecticides do not distinguish between pest and pollinator. A rewilded garden accepts a certain level of imperfection because it recognizes that a living system is not sterile.

Structure matters too. In smaller urban spaces, planting vertically — allowing a native vine to climb a fence, training shrubs into layered hedges — multiplies habitat. I have planted Aristolochia macrophylla  (native Pipevine) along a boundary fence and watched native pipevine swallowtail caterpillars ( Battus philenor) claim it. I also planted Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’ instead of its more aggressive Asian cousins, and it hums with long-tongued pollinators in summer. These are not decorative choices alone; they are functional ones.

Water, even in modest amounts, transforms a garden. A small pond or shallow basin moderates temperature and invites amphibians, dragonflies, and birds. In a region where rainfall now comes in intense bursts, capturing and holding water — even briefly — increases resilience.

Less Lawn – More Life

Lawns, too, invite reconsideration. I am not suggesting that every garden become a full meadow, though I love them. But reducing mowing frequency, allowing clover and selfheal (prunella) to bloom, or setting aside a small unmown strip changes the ecological equation dramatically. Clover stays low, tolerates drought, and feeds bees. Dandelions bloom when little else does. What we have long labeled as weeds often turn out to be early-season lifelines. Even the vegetable garden has changed. The beds that were once faithfully roto-tilled each spring now remain untilled. I used to believe turning the soil signaled a fresh start, a way to wake everything up. What I’ve learned instead is that every pass of the tiller disrupts fungal networks, exposes stored carbon to the air, and fractures the structure that soil organisms work all year to build. Now I top-dress with compost, lay down shredded leaves or straw, and let earthworms do the turning for me. The soil has become darker, more crumbly, better able to absorb heavy rain and hold moisture during dry spells. Yields have not declined — if anything, they’ve steadied. Rewilding, even in a productive vegetable garden, can mean choosing cooperation over disturbance and trusting the biology already at work beneath the surface. Perhaps most transformative, though, is planting trees. Native oaks, willows, and cherries function as vertical ecosystems, supporting hundreds of species of caterpillars — the essential protein source for nesting songbirds. In a time when bird populations have declined so dramatically, planting a native tree is not simply landscaping. It is restoration.

Rewilding does not mean abandoning order. My vegetable beds are fenced. Pathways are mown. Plants and plant communities are chosen intentionally. But the intention has shifted. Instead of asking, “How do I control this space?” I ask, “How does this space function?” I am creating an Intentional Wild.

When a row of evergreens failed on my property, I replaced them not with another monoculture, but with a layered hedgerow — deciduous shrubs mixed with evergreens, berries, nectar sources, shelter. Within a year, it thrummed with birds and insects. Loss became opportunity.

In a warming climate, gardens must do more than please us visually. They must absorb water, moderate heat, feed insects, shelter birds, build soil, and store carbon. Rewilding is simply the decision to let our gardens participate fully in that work.

It is not about going backward to some imagined pristine landscape. It is about moving forward with ecological awareness.
